The plot unfolds in 1829-th year. The judicial clerk of the Third Department of His Own Imperial Majesty's Chancellery, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (Alexander Petrov), burned his manuscripts, tormented by his alleged lack of talent in the writers' field. He is devastated and begins to drink. In this state of the young writer is the famous investigator Yakov Petrovich Guro (Oleg Menshikov). Guro is traveling from St. Petersburg to Poltava. Here, near the small village of Dikanka, he must uncover the mystery of the terrible murders of girls. Seeing in Nikolai Gogol a special gift, Guro decides to take it with him. So the detective and his new assistant begin to investigate together the horrors in the mysterious Dikanka.
